What is a welding helmet / welding hood?
What kind of welding helmet / welding hood do I need as a beginner or an expert?
What is the best welding helmet/welding hood for a beginner? Well welding helmets/welding hoods are a lot like any tool for anybody who's in a profession, in the beginning you can use any tool for what you are doing not as high quality because you're still learning. But the more you practice in your craft in any profession the quality of tools that you use make a difference even if it is very minute, a professional that has been doing this for a long-time notice that is a big difference. In the beginning of my welding career, I use an auto transition hood that I got from Harbor freight for $45, that welding helmet/welding hood works fine for me for the first two years. Now that I've been welding for 12+ years can I use a cheap harbor freight hood to do my job? Yes. what I want to use it on a day-to-day basis to do my job every day now. No. I use a Miller Electric - Digital Elite Vintage. Now the difference between a cheap welding helmet/welding hood, to start off with first one of the biggest and most obvious differences between the two is the viewing area in the more cost-effective welding helmets the viewing area tends to be a lot smaller. Being able to see exactly what you're doing when you're welding is a very very big deal so the bigger the viewing area, you can afford to buy the better, also the clarity of the lens is a very big difference, more expensive welding helmets/welding hoods you will tend to see that the viewing area is much better, clear.
The second most important thing on a quality welding helmet/welding hood is the setting/control panel. In the more cost-effective hoods, the settings/control panel are not as precise. I have noticed when I adjust the degree of darkness between 9 to 13 when you compare hood to hood, they're not the same, also the delay when I have adjusted the delay response on the inside of the more cost-effective hoods I have also noticed it doesn't work as well. When you buy a quality welding helmet/welding hood the digital settings on the inside work very well.
So to answer the question what kind of welding helmet/welding hood do you need as a beginner? One that is auto darkening, one that you can adjust the shades of darkness so you can protect your eyes, it also must have a decent delay response. What I recommend a harbor freight $45 hood no. But what I would recommend is a lower and Miller or Lincoln welding helmet/hood buy it from a reputable company you have one set of eyes!!! Protect them don't leave it up to the cheapest cost, because saving a couple dollars now may cost you some problems in the future. For the professional welder, I recommend a high-quality hood I will provide a link below. Miller 280053 Digital Infinity Welding Helmet with ClearLight Lens, Imperial
