We have installed thousands of security doors over the last ten years so we have found the best and most efficient ways to install security doors. We will first go over supplies needed to install a security door and then we will move on to how to do the install. First of all our security doors can be very heavy so we definitely recommend having two people to do the install. Next we will move on to what tools you will need to have on hand to do the install. You will definitely need a drill or an impacted with the right driver bit to fit the size blot you are going to use. Next you will need to get some lag bolts we use 3/8” x 3” inch up to 4”inch long. The reason that we do that is to make sure that we go into the king stud on the sides of the door frame. You will need a Phillips #2 hand screw driver so you can put on the lock and knob and you will also need a hammer to bend the tabs in. Some time the tabs are bent but you might need to bend it more toward the door frame. You will also need an adjustable wrench so you can take the brake away bar off the bottom of the door frame.
Now it is time to start the install, first you will have to take the plastic and foam off the door but be careful not to scratch your powder coating. Next it’s time to have your helper come over, you can then pick up the security door and insert the security door into the door opening. One of you would grab the security door on the hinge side and the other person will grab the security door on the lock and knob side. Both of you will pick the door up and very gently insert the security door in to the door opening. Try to put the hinge side in first and then the lock and knob side. Ok the person who is holding the hinge side will stay holding the door and the one person who is holding the lock and knob side will gently start to open the door. Open the door about 90 degrees the person that is holding the hinge side of the security door will let go of the hinge and grab the security door and then push the door in to the opening so there is no gap in between the two frames. Now you will grab the drill or impacted with your 3” inch or 4”inch lag bolts and I like to start with the top bolt hole on the hinge side of the security door. After you get the bolt in don’t forget to snug the bolt up, remember this is the only one holing the door up! Don’t worry if the door dose not shut we are not there yet. You will need to have the other person still pushing on the door so you can keep the gap as small as possible at this point you should put the other two to three bolts (depends on door height) in on the hinge side. Ok now you will need to step inside of the house and have your friend close the security door you might have to push the frame against the wood door frame to get the security door to shut. Take two or three steps back and look at the top of the door there should be about a 1/8”inch gap on the top, across the top. If the gap changes from one side to another you will have the other person lift the security door frame on the lock side up or down to get the gap on the top to be the same from one side to the other. When you get the security door frame to where you like it you will start to put the lag bolts in on the knob side of the security door frame. Remember to put all the bolts in tight you can pre drill the hole if you would like but we usually don’t.
Now it is time to put the lock and knob into your newly installed security door and enjoy your added security and beauty. If you have any questions you can check out the security door install video above or give us a call at 702-850-4082.
